How To: Find Websites

Subject Directories
These sites are mostly human-generated databases of Web sites, arranged by subject; they cover fewer resources than search engines but provide more focus and guidance for the topics they cover. They will usually refer you to the most reliable Web sites. Use these to start searching or browsing for broad topics

About.com
INFOMINE
Librarian's Index to the Internet
The WWW Virtual Library
Yahoo

Search Engines
These sites are mostly computer generated databases of Web sites; they may vary according to size, content, searching capabilities, and results ranking. Use these to search for unique keywords and limiting searches, especially if you know exactly what you are looking for. Different search engines will give you different results.

AltaVista
Excite
Google
HotBot
Northern Light

Meta-Search Engines

These sites let you search several different search engines simultaneously AND integrate the results from these search engines. Meta-search engines should be used primarily for simple searches: use them as supplements to search engines.

Ask Jeeves
Ixquick
MetaCrawler
Metaeureka
Search.com

How To: Write a research paper

  • Analyze the research problem: Understand your assignment, determine what you know and what you need to know; get an overview of the subject; consider questions and ideas about possible topics. Encyclopedias and dictionaries are good places to start.
  • Narrow your topic: Develop possible one sentence research questions, choose one of the questions
  • Gather information: Collect and record information on your topic; locate books and audiovisual material owned by Bethel by searching CLICnet; decide which databases will be most appropriate for your topic. Record your sources in the bibliographic format required by Bethel Seminary (Turabian or APA)
  • Prepare to write: Analyze, critically interpret, evaluate, organize and synthesize your information, construct a thesis statement, weed out irrelevant information
  • Write: Think about the assignment, prepare an outline, write a rough draft, know your source and cite it, revise and proofread the work.

See General Research and Writing Resources for more information.
