Listed below are the steps to doing research on a Biblical text or topic.  The list includes resources available at Bethel Seminary Library.

1. Use Bible Dictionaries

Bible dictionaries are organized alphabetically like encyclopedias.  They have articles on thousands of topics. Useful sources are often listed at the end of articles. 

2. Search the Library Catalog

Bethel's holdings of print and non-print materials may be identified by searching the CLICnet library catalog. The catalog contains holdings information for Bethel Seminary's St. Paul, San Diego, and Seminary of the East campus libraries, Bethel University Library, and the other CLIC libraries.

3. Find Articles

Academic Search Premier (Full-Text)
This database contains indexing for nearly 8,050 publications, with full text for more than 4,600 of those titles. PDF backfiles to 1975 or further are available for well over one hundred journals, and searchable references are provided for more than 1,000 titles. Academic Search Premier contains full text coverage in biology, chemistry, education, engineering, humanities, physics, psychology, religion and theology, sociology, etc. Updated daily.

The ATLA Religion Database (includes some Full-Text)
The ATLA Religion Database is a comprehensive database designed to support religious and theological scholarship in graduate education and faculty research. The databasecontains citations from international titles and 13,000 multi-author works in and related to the field of religion. It also includes a full range of index citations to journal articles, essays in multi-author works, and book reviews. Though coverage is from 1949 to the present, not all publications begin in 1949.

Catholic Periodical & Literature Index (includes some Full-Text)
The database covers all aspects of the Catholic faith and lifestyle, and includes over 380,000 index citations of articles and reviews published in Roman Catholic periodicals, Papal documents, church promulgations, and books about the Catholic faith that are authored by Catholics and/or produced by Catholic publishers.

Christian Periodical Index 
The Christian Periodical Index (CPI) indexes over 130 publications providing access to articles and reviews written from an evangelical Christian perspective or of interest to the evangelical community

Encyclopedia Judaica (full-text)
Updated edition of this work on Judaism features more than 21,000 entries on Jewish life, culture, history, and religion, written by Israeli, American and European subject specialists

New Testament Abstracts (some full-text)
Coverage: 1985 - present, updated annually
The database contains abstracts for study of the New Testament and its historical milieu.

The database features indexing and abstracts for journal articles, monographs, multi-author works, and software related to Old Testament studies.

Oxford Reference Online : Religion and Philosophy Collection
(full-text)
Provides subject reference works in a single cross-searchable resource.

RefWorks

A Web-based bibliography and database manager that allows you to create your own personal database by importing references from text files or online databases. You can use these references in writing papers and automatically format the paper and the bibliography. To create an account from off-campus, you will need the RefWorks Group Code.

Religious & Theological Abstracts
Coverage: 1978 - present, updated annually
Provides summaries of articles appearing in scholarly journals in the fields of Religion and Theology.

Southern Baptist Periodical Index
Coverage: 1985 - 2002
A cumulative index of approximately 50 periodicals issued each year by historically Southern Baptist Convention-related agencies, institutions, and associations.

4. Use Other Reference Tools

Commentaries

Commentaries interpret passages in Scripture verse by verse and are arranged in Biblical order.  For recommended commentaries on specific books of the Bible, see Recommended Bible commentaries, listed book by book  (Check location and availability).

Concordances

Concordances list every word in the Bible in context.
