Organization: VITAS Urban CPE Program, San Diego, CA
Unit: Fall-Winter 2013-2014 CPE
Unit Description: The VITAS - Urban Program is offering an extended unit of CPE from October 2013 to April 2014. This program offers CPE learning opportunities in a variety of clinical settings, including VITAS Innovative Hospice Care and such urban sites as an outreach program for vulnerable seniors, homeless shelters, and hospitals. CPE students are guided and supported in developing the skills and inner resources to provide compassionate and competent spiritual care to patients, residents, staff, and families. We offer experience-based theological education for seminarians, clergy, and lay persons of diverse faith traditions, cultures, and ethnic groups.

This unit offers a specialization in spiritual care at the end of life. For over three decades VITAS (from the Latin for life) has been a leading national provider of hospice services for terminally ill patients and their families.

The CPE Supervisors at VITAS San Diego are John Gillman, Ph.D, and Rabbi Susan Freeman. John has extensive experience as chaplain and pastoral educator and is certified by both the Association of Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE) and the National Association of Catholic Chaplains (NACC). Susan has much experience as an educator and hospice chaplain. VITAS is fully accredited to offer Level I, Level II, and Supervisory CPE by the ACPE. Also CPE students may earn academic credit for their unit of CPE.
