Summary Statement: This is a developmental ministry position designed for a Seminary student who is currently preparing for ministry to assist in the growth and mentoring of SMP Team Leaders and to support SMP by overseeing the administrative functions of the ministry.

Requirements:

• Experienced, effective leader who has experience in cross-cultural missions and possesses strong cultural competency. Call to future cross-cultural ministry preferred.
• A good rapport with college students and a basic knowledge of college student development (youth ministry/missions can be a good preparation ground for this).

Unique Responsibilities:

• Oversee the administrative functions of the missions program (both carrying out the functions directly and overseeing students who carry out many of the tasks).
• Direct mentorship with student leaders of SMP mission teams.
• Assist in the development of mission team leaders.

Collaborative Responsibilities:

• Support the vision and direction of Solidarity Missions Project at Bethel University.
• Work with Associate Campus Pastor and other SMP leadership in developing training/debriefing program for Team Leaders (August-May).
• Meet regularly with Associate Campus Pastor for program planning and coordination.
• Optional opportunity to participate in a Spring Break or Summer Missions team.
• Carry out other duties as assigned by the Associate Campus Pastor.

This position is part-time (15 hrs/wk) for the 2012-2013 school year.

Position Description: Intern Field Education, September 1, 2012–May 31, 2013
Learning Outcomes and Objectives

1. Participation in worship leadership.

• At least once a month the intern will help lead in the worship service—gaining experience in leading the various elements of the service (call to worship, prayer of confession, assurance of forgiveness, children’s sermons, scripture readings, pastoral prayers, and offertory invitations and prayers).
• At least three to four times during this internship the intern will be invited to preach at the primary Sunday morning worship service.
• The intern will sit in on at least one baptism orientation with a family seeking to have their child baptized.

2. Participation in administrative leadership.

• The intern will help to resource at least one committee throughout the internship with careful attentiveness to learning what it means to resource a committee rather than do the committee’s work, and with an emphasis on learning how to empower the committee members and discern their interests and gifts.
• The intern is strongly encouraged to attend the monthly Session meetings.

3. Participation in Congregational life.

• The intern will be involved in planning at least one Advent and Lent activity or worship for the congregation.
• The intern will participate in several fellowship events to get to know the members better.
• The intern will participate in the mid-week Trinity Alive education program to gain an understanding of the needs and dynamics of a Christian Education program.

4. Participate in Pastoral Care (to the extent possible given the situation and scope of the congregation over the course of the internship).

• The intern will “shadow” the pastor in working with a family to plan a funeral.
• The intern will “shadow” the pastor through a pre-marital counseling session.
• The intern will do at least five visits to shut-ins of the congregation.
• The intern will make at least one hospital visit with the pastor.

5. Evaluation.

• The intern and supervisor (Pastor) will meet monthly to review these goals and insights learned with a Leadership Advisory Group consisting of selected members of the congregation.
• The supervisor (Pastor) will submit a written evaluation to the denomination’s CPM mid-way through the internship regarding the intern’s continuing preparation for ministry as experienced by the congregation.
• Both the intern and the supervisor (Pastor) will provide written evaluations, signed by each other, to the CPM at the end of the internship reflecting on the experience of the internship and the progress the intern has made in preparing for the Ministry of Word and Sacrament in the PC(USA).
• Evaluations from the LAG and pastor will be submitted to the seminary at end of year.

A modest stipend for the year is provided by the church.

Job Description: The Union Gospel Mission Twin Cities is seeking to change lives with the Gospel. The Volunteer Chaplain intern gains valuable experience in the practice of para-church ministry by providing support to Staff Chaplains who oversee spiritual care for all clients at the Mission. In addition, the Chaplain Interns develops friendships, gains trust, and guides at-risk individuals in making life changing decisions.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Provides spiritual care to residents including periodic pastoral follow up via visitation, prayer, pastoral counsel, and spiritual direction.
2. When required, provides administrative support for the Case Management program including the use of client intake and tracking process software when qualified.
3. Supports the evening chapel program schedule, chaplain staffing, and adheres to department and mission policies and procedures.
4. Fosters a co-operative work environment with other Mission programs to ensure that program goals and objectives are achieved.
5. Responsible for maintaining client confidentiality in accordance with Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) privacy regulations.

Minimum Job Requirements include:

1. Demonstrated Christian maturity and passion for ministry.
2. Active local church membership and ministry involvement.
3. Be willing to participate in on-going educational opportunities and certifications, i.e., CPR certification.
4. Must complete a background check with no history of violence or sexual offenses.
5. Background experience appropriate to assigned area(s) when required, i.e., Case Management, etc.
6. Must work as required to satisfy the requirements of the sending organization.
