Church:  Church of the Open Door, 9060 Zanzibar Ln N., Maple Grove, MN 55311
Position:  Student Mentors
Job Description:  Church of the Open Door in Maple Grove, MN is working to develop a new model for student mentorship based on a theory of change that includes a 1-on-1 relationship, a pro-social community, and service/learning environments. We are looking for Bethel seminary students that want to be a part of these guided, Wednesday night mentoring environments and that share a belief that mentoring relationships can create transformation in both the student and the mentor.  The program consists of a mentoring relationship for each student in the context of weekly experiences that will consist of either learning environments at Open Door or serving environments out in the community. Within each environment, mentors and students will participate in numerous experiences aimed at developing their understanding of themselves, God and others. They can also develop the character and skills needed to help enrich and connect with the larger community around them.  Here is some of the philosophy behind the mentoring program at Open Door and a link to the application if you're interested (miniurl.org/LX0 ).
Candidate Description:  The role of a mentor is to build an intentional relationship with a middle school or high school student through shared experiences and reflective conversations. During the weekly experiences, a mentor's role is to actively listen to the student and help them process and reflect on the experience and how it potentially impacts their life. Mentors are not expected to play the role of a teacher or have all the answers to student questions and issues. Instead, the goal is to be a consistent, loving presence in the student's life. Each mentor will also be paired with a mentor coordinator, who will act as a mentor, coach and resource throughout the mentor/student relationship.  If you have any questions feel free to email Meg Murphy (mmurphy@thedoor.org). We'd love to have you as a part of the program as we try to empower students to follow Jesus and make a difference in the world around them.
