Bethel Seminary

Bethel Seminary San Diego

Supervised Ministry

BSSD Night Bethel Seminary San Diego has approximately 226 students studying for pastoral ministry, Christian education, youth ministry, missions, evangelism, pastoral counseling/professional therapy, as well as other varied para-church activities.

TL551 Synopsis

Students entering pastoral ministry and Christian education are required to take TL551 early in their educational experience.  It is necessary for a student to demonstrate a developing capability in ministry that holds promise for professional success.  Learning how to deal in Christian love with many demands and many personality types is essential in preparation for the ministry. This program incorporates a variety of experiences designed to allow the student to see how he/she is viewed by others.

The impact of a "hands-on" experience is vital to the spiritual formation and theological integration needed for a student to gain personal maturity. To stimulate the realities of ministry, the student is to take the initiative in seeking an internship in an organization appropriate to his/her background and goals.

The normal internship period is for five months, and the student is expected to minister a minimum of 6-10 hours per week.  It may, or may not, be a paid position.  It includes 10 hours of supervisory sessions with an experienced pastor or staff member. The supervisor attends a training workshop at the seminary at least once every two years for the purpose of providing insight into the process of mentoring and the art of supervision, as well as to review the philosophy and process of supervised ministry.
