TL551 Overview

Supervised Ministry Program

BETHEL SEMINARY SAN DIEGO 

Preparation for ministry at Bethel Seminary is both "in the classroom" and "in the field."

Experience in performing ministry complements and enhances the classroom learning as skills are sharpened and personal growth occurs. As ministry is performed under a Pastor/Supervisor, competence is gained toward being ready for professional ministry, which demands a holistic development in:

1. Personal maturation

2. Theological integration

3. Spiritual formation

4. Skill development

Phase I

TL551 FIELD EDUCATION PRACTICUM

1. DESCRIPTION:

A field-based program in a local church with leadership opportunities.  The student will serve under the mentorship of an experienced pastor or other professional.

2. COMPONENTS:

  • A 5-month observation and participation
  • 6-10 hours per week.
  • Internship Agreement.
  • 10 Supervisor Mentoring Sessions.
  • 2 Peer Group Meetings.
  • 2 Reflection Papers.
  • Supervisor Evaluation at Conclusion of Internship.

Phase 2

TL552A PROFESSIONAL INTERNSHIP

This course normally runs concurrently with the academic year.  The student attends internship sessions in the fall quarter and begins ministry in an area related to their intended future field of service.

  • An 8-month professional internship.  A 15-20 hour week contract, 1 internship agreement, 5 experience in ministry reports, 2 spiritual formation reports, 6 preaching evaluations, 6 lay internship committee meetings, 2 peer group meetings, 10 supervisor meetings, and 3 internship evaluations.  (The TL552A internship can be completed with a 3-month full-time ministry position).
  • Vocational testing and assessments.
  • Exit interview.  (With supervisor and supervised ministry director.)
  • Prerequisites.   The student is encouraged to take PM110 prior to/or concurrently with TL552A.

PROFILES OF MINISTRY

For M.DIV. and M.A.C.E.   (Completed by student and Kent Eaton.)

  • Profiles of Ministry (4 observers describe the intern) 
  • Casebook (identifies attitudes, approaches, perceptions)
  • Taped Interview (discovers potentials, strengths, needs)
  • Group Interpretation and Integrative Interview 
  • Resume Update and Placement Session
  • Final interview
