Bethel Seminary
“Creating an Entrepreneurial Ethos, Developing the Art of Improvisation,
and Discipling Innovation”
Erwin McManus and Alex McManus
Mosaic, Los Angeles, California
Bethel Seminary is launching a prototype cohort in its Doctor of Ministry program that will feature Erwin McManus as its primary instructor and mentor. Erwin serves as Distinguished Lecturer at Bethel Seminary and is also the lead pastor of Mosaic in Los Angeles, CA., one of the country’s most culturally diverse and methodologically innovative ministries. Erwin is highly sought after as a ministry theorist, practitioner, speaker and writer who is generating new ideation to enhance the effectiveness of emerging churches. This prototype cohort will seek to engage its members in multi-sensory learning experiences in an effort to foster interaction, exploration, and research directed toward creating an effective ethos in the emerging church that will enable it to more effectively engage culture with the good news of the Kingdom.
Module One, at the beginning of year one will be a residential intensive that provides a Program Orientation and includes an on-site research intensive at Mosaic in Los Angeles and the Origins Conference (Module One) and a time of interaction with the Cohort Mentor. Module Two of year one will be a ten-week Blackboard course ELD502 “Developing an Ethos for the Emerging Church” and Module Three will be another residential intensive (BSSD) ELD503 “Understanding the Trilogy of Creativity, Uniqueness and Diversity.” The second year of the program will begin with ELD504 “Understanding Postmodern Culture and the Emerging Church.” Year two will also include CLD512 “Research Methodology and Design,” as well as ELD505 “Writing for Publication.” Year three is dedicated to a final on-site research visit to an emerging church of the student’s choice and the writing and editing of their dissertation and chapter project.
The most unique aspect of this prototype will be the writing of a volume entitled “Creating an Effective Ethos in the Emerging Church,” one of five books in a leadership series jointly sponsored by Bethel Seminary and Mosaic, to be published by Thomas Nelson. The cohort mentor will serve as the volume editor as well as a significant contributor to the volume, with the potential for each student to contribute one chapter. The Director of the Doctor of Ministry program will serve as the leadership series editor. This will provide cohort members with the opportunity to make a significant contribution to the theory and practice of the emerging church, as well as enable them to gain an introduction and entry into professional book publishing. Similar Doctor of Ministry cohorts will produce subsequent volumes in the series. It is Bethel’s intent to launch one new cohort annually over a five-year period. The goal is to release one new volume in the leadership series each year.
